HEAVY DUELING LIGHTSABERS
HEAVY DUELING LIGHTSABERS
Today, we here at Saber Duel™ want to talk about heavy dueling lightsabers and what actually makes lightsabers even worthy of being classified as “dueling lightsabers”. In our opinion, too many cheap lightsabers are being mislabeled as combat lightsabers and causing irreputable damage to the saber community. This leaves all of our new saber enthusiasts very disappointed and victimized.
Some lightsaber companies out there are making false claims about their supposed heavy dueling lightsabers, and yet other companies are just flat out lying to all of us. The topic today will not cover any lightsaber companies or reviews, so if you are new to the saber community or would like more information on the best places to buy lightsabers, check out Lando Sabers on his YouTube channel here. He’s done an excellent job sorting out the good, the bad, and the ugly with an extensive list of over 200 lightsaber companies. We’re hoping one day Saber Duel™ will be on that list, along with the other lists out there, by earning our place in the community. Earned by providing great customer service and quality custom lightsabers.
First and foremost, all lightsabers are not created equal. This does not mean that some lightsaber hilts are better than others just because you can smash trees with them! There are so many great unique lightsabers out there that are not intended for heavy dueling. Instead, they are meant for nostalgic mantle display with the capability of just light dueling. These lightsaber hilts are most commonly “replica” hilts designed to be identical to the lightsabers in the movies, video games, and shows we all know and love. Reputable lightsaber companies will disclose these types of details and never make false claims of durability. Saber Duel™ was founded on this very concept and we would like to share some general guidelines to help make your purchasing choice more catered towards your particular needs.
1. Dueling lightsabers, and especially “heavy dueling lightsabers”, typically need more than just one or two retention screws! Do not buy a lightsaber hilt because it looks cool, and with only one or two retention screws at the very tip of the blade emitter, thinking that it’s going to be enough support for heavy dueling. IT IS NOT! Just because lightsaber companies claim it is adequate for “heavy dueling”, it very seldom is. Hard hits will jar the blade loose every time. After two or three rotations and retightening, you will inevitably have to replace your blade. If it’s a neopixel lightsaber blade, the cost becomes prohibited!
If… there are two retention screws lined up vertically, two inches apart in the saber emitter at the top of the lightsaber hilt, it is the rule breaker for this guideline. The retention screws really do have to be around two inches in separation for this to apply because the weight of the lightsaber blades need solid reinforcement (especially much heavier neopixel lightsaber blades).
It takes three to four retention screws to hold a lightsaber blade on sturdy if it is being hit with “full swinging force”. We have up to six retention screws in some of our heavy dueling lightsabers because serious combat requires serious hardware. They still require tightening after each and every training session, but we guarantee you will not have loose, wobbly blades in the middle of a dueling session if properly tightened beforehand.
Yes, our Saber Duel™ guarantee will cover all of our lightsaber blades for a period (please refer to our guaranteed link at the bottom of our website), but it is far better to start with custom dueling lightsabers that are designed for heavy dueling from the beginning. In our Saber Duel™ shop, nothing is “drop shipped”! We drill holes. We sand parts for precision alignment. We quality test each and every lightsaber hilt for sound, light, and durability before it leaves our workshop. Make sure any lightsaber company you are looking to buy from can say the same thing.
2. Heavy dueling lightsabers, from the Saber Duel™ standpoint, essentially meaning two people swinging at each other as hard as they possibly can, require a considerable amount of durability. Replica sabers from the factory, no matter what statements are made, generally are not designed for this type of lightsaber fighting. Replica hilts tend to be very uncomfortable and only have one or two retention screws holding the blade in. Sometimes only one screw is holding the blade in place. At Saber Duel™, we try to modify certain replicas in the saber workshop to correct and reinforce their combat efficiency, but even with our custom drilled holes, we still don’t recommend them for heavy dueling. In the end, even with our lightsaber customizations on replicas, it really comes down to comfort.
3. The best dueling lightsabers with sound bought for the purposes of lightsaber fighting should be extremely comfortable! After just ten minutes of spinning, twirling, and swinging a neopixel dueling lightsaber, an uncomfortable lightsaber hilt will completely destroy your hands. Custom lightsabers that are too smooth will slip out of your hands and a lightsaber hilt that is too sharp will cut hands and fingers to shreds. Balance is vital. Read our Saber Duel™ descriptions carefully to find the right lightsaber for your needs. There will always be give and take when it comes to comfort versus aesthetics, and we have spent a considerable amount of R&D trying to balance the two.
4. There is a tremendous amount of debate about an RGB Lightsaber versus a Neopixel Lightsaber when it comes to heavy dueling lightsabers. The answer to this question changes just a little each year as technology changes. Yes, the best lightsaber to buy for heavy dueling is still an RGB lightsaber because the lightsaber blades are hollow and have nothing inside the blade that can be damaged. All though, neopixel lightsaber blades are now 3mm thick and can take quit a bit of abuse today.
We personally think our neopixel lightsaber blades can withstand anything within reason during heavy dueling, plus our Saber Duel™ guarantee covers you for a whole year if something happens, and random things DO happen. We understand. The good news is that there is a nifty little device that will give you the best of both worlds. Saber Bay sells an RGB/NEOCREE Module that allows you to use your neopixel lightsaber hilt with a hollow RGB lightsaber blade. Genius!!! Now you can use your neopixel lightsaber hilt with a hollow blade and keep all your soundfonts in use, and “smash” your heart out with no worries about damaging your neopixel blade.
In closing, the best dueling lightsabers for sale always come down to comfort, the proper number and placement of retention screws, the quality of the blades, and the type of soundboard in the lightsaber hilt. One of our personal favorites is the Saber Duel™ Death Knight. This saber hilt has three retention screws located in the proper places, comes with the optional Golden Harvest V3 Phase 4 soundboard, and is very comfortable to wield. With the exception of our Saber Duel™ Galaxy Saga Collection, all of our custom lightsabers here at Saber Duel™ are designed specifically for heavy dueling. You can choose between RGBx, Xenopixel, Golden Harvest, or Proffie. We do our best to modify the replica models for at least moderate dueling, and in some cases heavy dueling lightsabers can still be accomplished with modifications on our lightsaber replicas. Please feel free to contact us anytime for any questions you may have on our Saber Duel™ Collections.
RGB lightsabers are great for dueling because the lightsaber blades are hollow and can be purchased at Saber Duel with a 3mm thickness option, making them very durable for heavy dueling.
All of our custom lightsabers at Saber Duel are specifically designed and built for heavy dueling. Even our neopixel lightsaber hilts come with a 3mm lightsaber blade that is rated for heavy dueling. However, we still suggest our RGB lightsabers for the best heavy dueling lightsabers in the galaxy.
Our neopixel lightsabers at Saber Duel can absolutely be used for dueling. Our neopixel lightsaber blades are 3mm thick and guaranteed for one year.
Some of our lightsabers at Saber Duel can be very heavy. Neopixel lightsabers are heavier than RGB lightsabers because the neopixel lightsaber blades contain LCD lights for a more realistic effect. RGB lightsabers are much lighter because the lightsaber blades are hollow.
Saber Duel offers 4 choices of lightsaber soundboards. We offer RGB soundboards, Proffieboards, Xenopixel soundboards, and our favorite, the epic Golden Harvest V3 Phase 4 soundboard. All of our soundboards come with the Saber Duel Guarantee.
All of our lightsabers at Saber Duel take around 14 days. We build upon order and quality test all of our heavy dueling lightsabers before they ship from our workshop. Saber Duel offers free shipping to most of the United States.
At Saber Duel we take pride in making sure our custom lightsabers are all rated for heavy dueling with the exception of our Galaxy Saga Collection, which we do try to modify for medium to heavy dueling depending on the model.
All of the soundboards at Saber Duel have smooth swing including our RGB lightsabers. The best smooth swing can be found on Proffieboards and Golden Harvest V3 Phase 4 boards.
